How to use a Jakes Resume in Overleaf without losing the one-page layout

Overleaf edits LaTeX source. It does not turn a PDF into an editable resume. Start by deciding whether you already have usable source code or need to rebuild the layout with your own content.

The quick answerIf you have the original LaTeX files, upload the complete project to Overleaf and edit the content in place. If you only have a PDF or image, use it as a visual reference and rebuild a simple one-column document instead of trying to convert it.

Choose the right starting point

You have LaTeX source files. Create an Overleaf project, upload the full folder, and compile it before changing any wording. A successful first compile gives you a safe baseline.
You only have a PDF. Do not expect the PDF to become editable LaTeX. List the visible sections, then recreate only the structure you need with your own headings and bullets.
You are still writing the content. Draft the resume in a simple editor first. Keep one source of truth for dates, job titles, project links, and achievement bullets before formatting it.

Keep the Jakes Resume style readable

Use one column and a consistent sequence: contact details, education, experience, projects, and technical skills.
Keep headings visually distinct, but do not use decorative text boxes or sidebars for essential information.
Put one accomplishment on each bullet. Lead with the result or action, then add the context that makes it believable.
Use project links only when they help a reviewer verify the work. Long raw URLs consume valuable space.
Compile after each small group of changes. It is easier to find a layout problem after one edit than after a complete rewrite.

Fix overflow without shrinking everything

When the document reaches a second page, remove repeated context before changing font size or margins. Combine overlapping bullets, shorten technology lists, and keep only projects that prove a different capability. A readable one-page document is more useful than a crowded page that technically fits.

Run a final PDF check

Download the compiled PDF, confirm it has one page, and select a line of text to confirm that the document contains real text rather than a screenshot. Read it at normal zoom as well: if dates, headings, or bullets are hard to scan, revise the content before chasing a smaller layout.
