JAKES RESUME FORMAT
How to Fill a Jakes Resume With Little Experience
Start with education and the strongest work you can explain honestly: a project, a course assignment, volunteer work, or a part-time role. Put projects above experience when they show more relevant decisions and results. A short, specific page is stronger than an invented job history.
- 1WorkCan you name the actual project, task, or responsibility?
- 2ChoiceCan you explain a decision you made or a problem you solved?
- 3ProofCan you point to a test, artifact, user, or observed result?
If an entry passes only the first check, improve the work or leave it out. Do not invent a metric to make it look complete.
Choose evidence before choosing section order
Make a private inventory of school projects, lab work, coursework, volunteer tasks, part-time work, and independent builds. For each item, write one sentence about your own contribution. A class project with a clear design decision may be more useful for a software role than an unrelated job title. An unrelated job can still earn space when it demonstrates responsibility, service, or coordination that you can describe precisely.
Then rank the entries against the job description. Keep the ones that show the closest kind of work. This is an editorial choice, not a claim that a particular section order will pass a screening system.
Use education for context, not padding
State your school, program, and expected or completed date accurately. Add relevant coursework only when it helps explain skills that you also show in a project. A long list of introductory classes is less useful than one project that shows how you applied a concept. If you have an academic distinction you can verify, include it; if you do not, leave the space for stronger work.
Turn small projects into concrete entries
Describe the problem, your action, and the evidence you can defend. For example, a student who built a study planner could write: “Built a course planner that checks prerequisite conflicts; wrote tests for missing and duplicate course entries.” This is an illustrative sentence, not a result from a real candidate. The value is in the checkable work and the technical choice, even without a large user count.
For a team project, name your part instead of taking credit for the entire build. “Implemented the input validation and documented edge cases” tells a reader more about your work than “Created a full-stack platform with a team.” A link to a clean repository or demo can help someone inspect the artifact, but only add a link that works and represents your contribution.
Keep part-time work when it carries useful evidence
Do not relabel a service or campus job as engineering. Keep its real title, then show an actual responsibility: training a colleague, reconciling records, handling a busy shift, or improving a repeatable process. If it has little connection to the target role and you have stronger projects, shorten it to one entry. The page should explain your readiness, not hide your history.
Fill and check the one-page draft
- In Jakes Resume Builder, enter your contact details and education first. Add only details you are comfortable putting in a submitted resume.
- Add the best project and your most relevant work entry. Move Projects above Experience if the project is stronger evidence.
- Use a short Technical skills section for tools you can discuss through the entries above.
- Read the live preview at normal zoom. Remove repeated or vague bullets before shrinking useful content.
- Download the PDF and inspect the whole page. Select a sentence to confirm the exported text remains selectable.
The builder has Education, Experience, Projects, and Technical skills sections that you can reorder. It makes a one-page PDF in the browser; it cannot supply missing experience or verify a claim for you.
Questions people ask
What should a first-year student put on a Jakes Resume?
Start with education and one or two projects or assignments you can explain in detail. Include part-time or volunteer work when it shows a real responsibility. Leave empty sections out instead of inventing internships or outcomes.
Should Projects come before Experience if I have no internship?
Yes, when your projects offer the clearest relevant evidence. Put the section with the strongest honest proof near the top, then keep the rest of the page easy to scan.
